NEW SPACE FOR CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY

Space Dock No. 1 is the result of close collaboration between the Cultural Service of the town of Vevey and the Images Festival '. This space is dedicated to presenting contemporary photographers, with a program that draws only in the vast directory of participants in the International Grand Prix of Photography in Vevey.

This contest is one of the best equipped in Europe. An international jury awards a scholarship to aid in the creation of 30,000 CHF (approx. € 20,000) to enable the realization of a photographic project presented as part Festival Images'. In 2009, the contest has received records of over one thousand professionals from all five continents.

Space Dock No. 1 now allows to permanently have the incredible visual heritage which happens every two years in Vevey - thus ensuring the town of images in constant contact with the photographic international high level.

The new exhibition space at Pier No. 1 Vevey This
"WALK ON MY EYES" by Paolo Woods, a personal and intimate portrait of contemporary Iranian society.

Begun in 2005, when the election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, "Work on my eyes" looks at national identity and the sometimes adversarial relationship between tradition and the desire for freedom in this country. Photographs by Paolo Woods break stereotypes to show Iran in all its diversity. "I wanted to show that the Iranians may be amazing, crazy, bold, insolent and discontented, and that therefore they are not a homogenous block as the regime would have us believe. As explained himself Paolo Woods, the theatrical nature and complexity of Persian society that led him to this series of photographs.

This work was presented at the Rencontres d'Arles past and has been published by Editions Grasset & Fasquelle, in collaboration with journalist Serge Michel.

Born in 1970, Canadian and Dutch parents, Paolo Woods grew up in Italy. He is based in Paris and worked for ten years with newspapers and magazines such as Time, Newsweek, or the World Magazine.

Paolo Woods specializes in documentary photography work in the long term. Using it as an instrument of investigation, it poses a watchful eye on the contemporary world. Each of his subjects, always in relation to the news, generally assumed work search for several years allowing his photographs to "tell" an aspect of contemporary society.

Since 1999, they published their investigations with Serge Michel and sign all three books combining photographs and texts. Their reports on the world of oil, the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq or the conquest of Africa by China have been widely disseminated. From each of these projects are also born exhibitions complementing the publications in the international press.

In 2009, Paolo Woods participated in the 7th Grand Prix International Photography Festival organized by the Vevey Images.

In conjunction with "Walk on me," Images Festival launches in early February, the new edition of his award in photography and filmmaking.

Before launching in February 2011 the 8th edition of the International Grand Prix of Photography in Vevey, Space Dock No. 1 presents the solo exhibition of Paulo Nozolino in tribute to the entire first edition of this competition, which took place in 1995.

Nozolino PAULO (Portugal - 1955)
the photographer Paulo Nozolino lives and works in Lisbon, after living in London and Paris in the 80 and 90. He has received numerous awards including the Prix Kodak in Portugal, the Leica Award Foundation in France. It was the first winner in the history of Grand Prix International Photo Vevey.

For thirty years, Paulo Nozolino tirelessly travels the world, trips that have largely fueled her photographic work. In 2005, the Museum of Puerto Serralves devoted a major retrospective.

SOLO
Paulo Nozolino talks about his work in these terms: "I have not formatted as the characters themselves, lost in the city, faced with environmental degradation. At that point, my images, they lose their identity. Charles-Henri Favrod, then president of the first jury Vevey, evoked a "spate of Europe".

For this project, Nozolino toured various European cities. In the manner of a travelogue urban, it gives to see Berlin, Trieste, Venice, Lisbon, Vienna, Budapest, Madrid, Paris with an unusual processing unit. Dark, sleek, stealthy, the photographer's eye awakens curiosity, confronts his subjects and questions to planning history.

In 1995, Paulo Nozolino was the Grand Prize winner of the 1st International Photography Festival organized by the Vevey Images.

Hans Op de Beeck (Belgium - 1969)

Hans Op de Beeck lives in Brussels. His work consists of sculptures, installations, videos, photographs, animated films, paintings and short stories. It uses both the minimalist language than the exaggerated forms, always with the desire to be precise. For ten years, Hans Op de Beeck focuses on the theme of our problematic relationship with time and space. He shows moments of everyday life, so as to capture the absurd nature of our postmodern existence.

ROOM
Room With Hans Op de Beeck examined the time a person sinks into a state of mental absence. This series of images is closer to painting than photography, because each of these interiors has emerged from the imagination of the artist, and has been fully realized in the computer. Framing refers to the Flemish primitives, making use of a central perspective, with a single point evanescent.

Each character now has the same look quiet and introspective, even a hint the Old Masters of painting. The artificial nature of the decoration is never denied. This series also refers to films, film noir, for use in black / white horizontal almost panoramic format.

Images Festival is pleased to present this work for the first time with all pieces created to date. In 2009, Hans Op de Beeck has participated in the 7th Grand Prix International Photography Festival organized by the Vevey Images.

Mathieu Bernard-Reymond

Born in Gap in 1976, Mathieu Bernard-Reymond lives and works in Lausanne. He trained in photography at the School of Applied Arts in Vevey and studied political science in Grenoble. Winner of numerous awards, his work has been exhibited in festivals, galleries and foundations in Europe, the United States and Japan. Two monographs are devoted to him: You are here (Actes Sud, 2003) and TV (Hatje Cantz, 2008).

Price Arcimboldio 2009, document transformations in the series "Monuments "Marks the interest of Mathieu Bernard-Reymond for the representation of data, statistics and their impact.
Interweaving photographs and computer manipulations, it uses graphics economic and other visualizations of existing information to create architecture that accidents implanted into the natural landscape. Share prices and exchange are modeled monuments, transcripts of the financial crisis - mental construction everywhere - in the virtual sculptures, contemporary and monumental, overwhelming the environment of their mass. About
"Monuments", Mathieu Bernard-Reymond said in the Times of 30 December 2009: "They are massive but at the same time already deteriorating. They combine two temporalities: that of short movements of the economy and that of the long movements of history. "
Moving pictures in a different context to convey meaning is a constant in Mathieu Bernard-Reymond. Result of extensive use of new digital technologies, his photographic work is characterized by a process of experimentation and freedom that comes with a real poetic inspiration.

by the social changes he sees in his country, they approach in documenting the different communities that make up South Africa. If his work was shown widely in his country, he presents Pier No. 1 its first solo exhibition in Europe.

For over a century ago, Johannesburg is a city of immigration that continues to attract a steady stream of people filled with hopes, from all over Africa. Marc Shoul interested in new waves of immigration that transformed post-apartheid it was called "Little New York" in "Little Lagos". Today some parts of Johannesburg gives the image of a pan-African Babylon exudes a captivating energy that many artists settle despite its reputation for being dangerous and unhealthy.

Life is difficult in buildings in the neighborhood of Hillbrow, which he explored for five years. Flatlands is a result of this long journey in a world sometimes dark, sometimes joyful but always fascinating. Every picture tells a story that illuminates a part of a world often misunderstood.

ANDREAS SEIBERT (Switzerland - 1970)

graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Zurich after studying literature and philosophy, Andreas Seibert lives and works in Tokyo since 1997. Freelance photojournalist for many international magazines, he spends much of his personal approach to changing society. Working on several projects throughout the course, he has been documenting 2002 the internal migration which upset China.

'FROM SOMEWHERE TO NOWHERE "
China is the scene of the largest migration in human history with 150 million villagers have left rural areas for cities. The recent economic crisis returned more than 20 million migrants in their campaigns after losing their jobs. In his series "From Somewhere to Nowhere," Andreas Seibert interested in following these workers in both cities when news of their return, often disenfranchised in the provinces.

This impressive documentary work has the subject of a book published in 2008 by Editions Lars Müller, a documentary directed by Villi Hermann presented at the last film festival in Locarno, as well as various exhibitions in eastern Switzerland and Europe.
